Creating a Mathematical Design Course
This post was originally a Twitter thread. I later wrote about teaching the course and giving a talk about it.
Interested in the Mathematical Design class for non-majors that I am creating this semester? The course webpage is https://hanusa.xyz/courses/128/20/. Topics so far: sequences, functions, parent functions, transformations, and visualizing function addition and multiplication. #MTBoS
The first #mathart medium is @Desmos where students will graph a family of functions and their transformations. Details here: https://hanusa.xyz/courses/128/20/project.html. After that we’ll explore parametric and polar functions and graphs.
I am recording @Desmos tutorial videos for the class and assembling them here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLj76nfNlZz156Sp5W_5SKy-q1UYgowLKp. The latest involves exporting to .svg so that they can be realized on an @EMSL #AxiDraw #mathart #plottertwitter.
Due to covid, we’re fully online this semester so going to the @qcmakerspace is complex and we may stick with creating digital artwork, although I’ll be trying out the #AxiDraw. In any case, I can’t wait to see what my students create! Updates sure to follow!
